Abstract

Using a modified shift-share approach, this paper examines the determinants of the value of output for the main crops in the department of Córdoba, on the Colombian Caribbean, for the period 2001-2011. The sources of variation considered were area, yield, price and location. We find that the value of agricultural output increased during the period under study. The location effect explains most changes in the value of crops, due to a relocation process, from temporary crops to permanent crops. The price effect contributed positively, which indicates that farmers respond to market incentives. The yield effect and the area effect were insignificant and nil, respectively.
