Abstract

This study describes the competitive elements of the shipbuilding industry in Colombia, with special emphasis on river transportation. Its purpose is to identify the sector’s productive potential and strategies to improve its competitiveness. Shipbuilding is not a very developed industry in Colombia. In fact, there are very few shipbuilding yards, medium or large, that specialize in building and repairing vessels for river transportation. Instead, most facilities consist of small artisan shops and dry docks with limited capacity. The analysis for the period 2000-2007 shows that the sector that has not been much exploited and could have high productive and private profit potential.
