El sector industrial de Barranquilla a principios del siglo XXI
Keywords:
Industria, BarranquillaAbstract
After a long period of stagnation, the industrial sector of Barranquilla has been showing signs of recovery. This paper describes the evolution of industry in the city during the first decade of the xxi century and assesses whether the favorable expectations during these years are reflected in measurable outcomes. Statistical evidence shows that the industrial sector had reasonably good results and is again one of the major economic engines of the city. Its growth rates, however, are still below the national average and the effects on the labor market are modest. The leading subsectors are mostly composed of big establishments with high capital intensity and export orientation. As to the location of industry, concentration around the metropolitan area of Barranquilla is increasing, specially in Malambo and Soledad.
