Abstract

This paper studies regional development in Colombia between 1990 and 2005. Economic structure is analyzed by a Shift-Share approach. Regional economic disparities is studied empirically for the presence and magnitude of departmental convergence, and also by revising the evolution of several measures of inequality. The results of the model do not lead to a rejection of the hypothesis of convergence of gnp per-capita, though the speed of convergence is slow and is estimated at an annual average of 1,7% in the period under study. However, although there is no evidence to reject the convergence hypothesis, the estimated static measures of regional disparity show that economic disparities among Colombian departments are increasing, so there is no convergence.
