Socioeconomic Aspects of Mortality in the Colombian Pacific Region

This study stresses the relevance of non-economic factors that explain mortality declines and health transitions as a key lesson to be applied in the context of less-developed regions in Colombia. In this regard, demographic methods were used to assess the burden of death in Colombian regions. Evidence supports the significance of external causes of death (including homicides) in producing shorter lifespans in the Pacific region. Economic implications were further evaluated by the statistical value of life. Despite regional differences in the willingness-to-pay to eliminate homicides, other causes of death show similar patterns. Assuming equal levels of wealth, the risk of mortality from other causes such as cerebrovascular and ischemic heart diseases would have similar economic values if eliminated in the Pacific region or in Bogotá. Since regional disparities in income actually exist, the message for public health is to take action equally in all regions, independently of income levels.
